What to do after floods
- Avoid floodwaters. The water may be contaminated by raw sewerage. The water may also be electrically charged from downed power lines.
- Stay away from downed power lines and report them to the power company.
- Avoid moving water.
- Return home only when authorities indicate it is safe.
- Encourage children to talk. Let children talk about the disaster and ask questions as much as they want. Encourage children to describe what they're feeling. Listen to what they say.
- Consider your family's health and safety needs:
- Wash hands frequently with soap and clean water
- Wear your masks
- Throw away food that has come in contact with floodwaters.
- Drink plenty of clean water. Eat well and get enough rest.
- Listen for news reports to learn whether the community's water supply is safe to drink.
- Listen to news reports for information about where to get assistance for housing, clothing, and food.
- Continue breastfeeding your baby: this remains the safest and cleanest food for your baby.
- Seek necessary medical care at the nearest medical facility or contact your village health worker on where to access essential health services.
