What to do after floods

  • Avoid floodwaters. The water may be contaminated by raw sewerage. The water may also be electrically charged from downed power lines.
  • Stay away from downed power lines and report them to the power company.
  • Avoid moving water.
  • Return home only when authorities indicate it is safe.
  • Encourage children to talk. Let children talk about the disaster and ask questions as much as they want. Encourage children to describe what they're feeling. Listen to what they say.
  • Consider your family's health and safety needs:
    • Wash hands frequently with soap and clean water
    • Wear your masks
    • Throw away food that has come in contact with floodwaters.
    • Drink plenty of clean water. Eat well and get enough rest.
  • Listen for news reports to learn whether the community's water supply is safe to drink.
  • Listen to news reports for information about where to get assistance for housing, clothing, and food.
  • Continue breastfeeding your baby: this remains the safest and cleanest food for your baby.
  • Seek necessary medical care at the nearest medical facility or contact your village health worker on where to access essential health services.
